Use Participant Tags in Groups

What Are Participant Tags  

Group Participant Tags allow adding a short label to describe your role or identity within a group. This helps members understand who is who, especially in large or purpose-driven groups like communities, events, or school groups. Group admins can control this action for all participants - Manage Participant Tags in Groups.

How Participant Tags Work  

  • Tags can be unique to each group, you can set different tags across groups. 
  • Tags appear: 
    • Below your name in messages 
    • In the participants list 
    • During @mentions 
    • In chat search filters 
  • Tags are visible to: 
    • Current members 
    • New members who join later 

Tag rules  

  • Maximum tag length: 30 characters
  • Allowed:
    • Letters (A–Z, a–z) and Numbers (0–9)
    • Spaces
    • Special characters (. , ? ! ' " : ; - / @ & % + ( ) _ ~ \ | • √ π ÷ × ¶ § Δ € £ ¥ ¢ ^ ° = { } [] <> « » ± № © ® ™ ✓ # $ ₹ * `)
  • Not allowed:
    • Non-English characters
    • Emojis
    • Links or URLs
Note: If invalid characters are used, you’ll see an error.

  • Tap the group name 
  • Scroll to the participants list
  • Tap Add participant tag
  • Enter the tag 
  • Tap Save
